EXPERIENCE
2021 – present: Editor-in-chief at Jazz Bulletin.
Ca. 2015 – present: Freelance journalist for various magazines and newspapers, mainly about jazz and the Amersfoort region.
2000 – 2014: Staff writer at Utrechts Nieuwsblad/Amersfoortse Courant. Works for the arts department and the local editions in Utrecht and Amersfoort, respectively.
1979 – 2000: Freelance journalist at Het Parool and Jazz Nu/Jazzism magazine. Writes as well for De Groene Amsterdammer, Oor and HP/De Tijd.
1989 – present: Auteur of books about music and musicians; among others the internationally acclaimed biographies of jazzmen Chet Baker and Ben Webster. The book about Baker was published in Dutch, German, English, Japanese, Hungarian, Italian and (partly) Swedish.
1979 – present: Independent writer/journalist/musician, since April 2014 using the name ‘Jeroen de Valk Tekst & Muziek’. Texts for cd-booklets (in English), contributions to tv-shows for a.o. VARA (De Wereld Draait Door), NPS (De Kunst),Wereldomroep and Het Gesprek. As a jazz expert, Jeroen was interviewed countless times in both national and local radio shows, both in The Netherlands and Belgium. As a musician (double bass, bass guitar, composer), he performs regularly and can be heard on a series of CD’s.
1989 – 1992: Part time staff writer of computer manuals at Bohepa Automatisering, Amersfoort.
HOBBIES AND SKILLS
Languages: Fluency in both written and spoken Dutch and English. Fluency in spoken German. (My wife’s family is German.) I can make myself understood in French as well.
Journalist/writer: Active as a writer/journalist since the late ’70s. Able to write for both the specialist and the generalist.
